Password123? A guide to better security

Learn how to create strong passwords and secure important accounts. Get better security with these simple steps!

Digital threats are everywhere, and a weak password may be the only thing standing between you and a security breach. Do you want to secure yourself better? Here are some simple steps to take control of your security.

1. Use strong passwords

Passwords are your first line of defense against cyber attacks. But if your password is easy to guess, like "123456" or "Password123," it can be compromised in seconds. Hackers use advanced tools that can test thousands of password combinations in a short time. Therefore, you have to make it more difficult for them.

How to create a strong password:

  • Length and complexity: The password should be at least 12 characters long and contain a mixture of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols.
  • Uniqueness: Never use the same password for multiple accounts. One compromised password can give hackers access to several of your accounts.
  • Passphrases: Instead of a single word, use a phrase or combination of words that is easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess.

Example: Instead of "Password123", choose something like "SolnedgangVedFjorden2023!". This password is both long and complex, which makes it much more difficult to crack.

2. Prioritize the most important accounts

Not all accounts are equally important, so start by securing the ones that pose the greatest risk if compromised:

  • Email accounts: Email is often linked to many other services, and if someone gets access to your email, they can reset passwords on other accounts. Make sure your email password is particularly strong and unique.
  • Bank accounts and social media: These accounts require additional protection. Make sure passwords are strong, unique and up-to-date.

3. Good habits for better security

  • One password per service: Do not use the same password in multiple places. If one account is compromised, the others stay safe.
  • Use a password manager app: The apps can generate strong, unique passwords and store them securely so you don't have to remember them all.
  • Update your passwords regularly: It is a good habit to change passwords regularly, especially on accounts that are critical.
  • Avoid default passwords: Always change the default password on new devices. Default passwords are often known and pose a major security risk if not changed.
  • Beware of phishing: Phishing is a method where hackers try to trick you into entering your passwords on fake websites. Always check the URL before entering your username and password, and be wary of unsolicited messages asking for personal information.

4. Two-step verification: An extra layer of protection

Even the strongest passwords can be compromised. Two-step verification (2FA) adds an extra layer of security. With 2FA, you not only need your password to log in, but also a one-time code generated by an app that Google Authenticator. This code changes every minute, making it extremely difficult for hackers to gain access, even if they had your password.

In Catacloud, we offer two-step verification to secure your account. It only takes a few minutes to activate, but gives you peace of mind every time you log in. You get this option automatically when logging in. Contact our customer support if you have any questions regarding this.

5. Secure new devices and apps

When you buy new devices, such as a new phone or computer, always change the default passwords that come with them. These are often known and easily accessible to hackers. Install apps only from trusted sources and be aware of the permissions they ask for. Avoid giving apps access to more features than necessary, and keep all devices up to date with the latest security updates.

6. Secure sensitive information on the go

Avoid connecting to public Wi-Fi networks when handling sensitive information such as passwords or bank details. Instead, use mobile networks or a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to ensure that your data is protected.

7. Be consistent and up-to-date

Digital security is not a one-time job. You must regularly update passwords, revise security settings and monitor your accounts. Services such as Have I Been Pwned can help you check if your email address has been leaked in a data breach. If you find that your account has been compromised, act fast: change your password and review your security settings!

Take control of your digital security

Protecting your digital accounts doesn't take a lot of time, but it does require you to make conscious choices. Start with your most important accounts, like email and banking, and make sure your passwords are strong and unique. Combine this with two-step verification and regular updates, and you are well equipped against most online threats.

Make these measures part of your digital everyday life, and sleep safer at night, knowing that your data is well protected.
